Gomma Records teams up with peaches for this superb remix.  Not the average straight up the beat let the cash roll in thing most artist are doing.  This guys did take the time to play their own interpretation of this track.  Mad for 80’s I’m a maniac too.

Last year Gomma was approached to rework some songs from the legendary Casablanca Records catalogue. Of course we said yes. So me, Telonius, Munk and The Phenomenal Handclap Band did four new interpretations of classic tracks by Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder, Skatt Brothers, Stephanie Mills and from the Flashdance soundtrack!

For the project we needed a very special vocalist. There was only one who has the right understanding of history, the perfect dirty approach and enough soul: Peaches. And she was totally enthusiastic about that.

“Casablanca Reworks” will be out on 13 January 2012 on Gomma.

There are some songs that come along and turn into anthems and this is one of them.  I play it all the time on my way to the Bar.  I can’t believe this guy is my age.  What have I done with my life?

Tanqueray allows all of us to download it for free @ www.tanqueray.com/tonight , plus gives you a very bar-like experience on your computer, or you can download @ www.aloeblacc.com  Great song to a catchy beat, just listen to this master piece.

Aloe Blacc

Born to Panamanian parents in Los Angeles in 1979, E. Nathaniel Dawkins (aka Aloe Blacc) first began playing trumpet in elementary school, and continued with the instrument throughout high school. There he also independently released Imaginary Friends, produced by DJ Exile, with whom he would go on to form the hip-hop group Emanon. While at college at USC, though his artistic endeavors were placed behind his scholastic goals, Aloe still managed to learn how to play the guitar and the piano, and after graduating and spending some time in the corporate world, he decided to return to his first love, music. In 2005 Emanon’s full-length debut, The Waiting Room, came out on Shaman Works, and the next year his first solo album, Shine Through, a combination of neo-soul and Latin music, was released on Stones Throw. He partnered with the Truth & Soul Productions crew for 2010’s more organic effort Good Things. The album featured the hit single “I Need a Dollar” along with a cover version of the Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale.” ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi

Wicked Games (Chris Isaak Cover) - James Vincent McMorrow

Usually I write something about the artist, etc. You all know how it goes. But this is so beautiful that I actually have no words to describe it

Freelance Whales - “Girl U Want (Devo cover)”

Freelance Whales takes this classic, upbeat track by Devo and makes it their own, transforming it into something a little more dreamy. Their version is for slow dancing, for making mixtapes, and for lying awake late at night staring at your ceiling.

This track was suggested by my good pal Zach who has better taste than me and is frequently embarrassed by my company in public. Jazz Week was fun with our readers submitting their favourite jazz tunes, so submit your favourite covers!

Bon Iver - Skinny Love

Broken hatred! If you are broken hatred, as I’ve been, just do what Justin Vernon did. Go to a cabin in the woods and start writing great songs.  So nice to feel, no matter if you feel sad or happy, it makes “the ride worth while” (someone once said this).

Justin Vernon“Bon Iver” french for good winter, is a band founded on 2007 (what a year that was for me) by folk singer - songwriter Justin Vernon. Justin decided to move to a cabin in Wisconsin after getting his hart broken, plus his bandDeYarmond Edison broke up.  There his boredom pushed him into writing songs and melodies and just writing texts to go along with the melody.  He actually turned that cabin into a DIY-Studio where he first recorded most of the album songs. For Emma, Forever Ago

Skinny Love

Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order’s tall

And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind
And in the morning I’ll be with you
But it will be a different kind
And I’ll be holding all the tickets
And you’ll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love, what happened here?
Suckle on the hope in light brassieres
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full, so slow on the split

Minnie Riperton

I was looking for my Minnie, dunno why.  I guess I’m feeling a little nostalgic. This great track brings back a lot of memories, but never the less, it also makes me think of Estela.  She keeps saying how much she likes to dance with someone who is in the same wave length and their bodies just understand each other’s rhythm.  Hope it is that tan blond guy with dreadlocks we’ve been talking about.  I like what she’s saying … it’s just never happened to me.  Like most of my friends know, I’m a terrible dancer.

Don’t forget Minnie’s to listen to the all time incredible hot single from 1975 “Lovin’ You”.  It just makes want to cry YOU a river.  And for all of you Karaoke Fan’s good luck with trying to hit those five-and-a-half octaves.

MinnieMinnie Julia Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter best known for her vocal range of five-and-a-half octaves and her 1975 single “Lovin’ You”. She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph from 1972 until her death in the summer of 1979. They had two children - music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.

Riperton grew up on Chicago’s South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group, The Gems. Her early affiliation with the legendary Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backup for various established artist such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. In 1969 Riperton, along with Rotary Connection, played in the first Catholic Rock Mass at the Liturgical Conference National Convention, Milwaukee Arena, Milwaukee, WI, produced by James F. Colaianni. Riperton reached the apex of her short, but esteemed, career with her number-one hit single, “Lovin’ You,” on April 4, 1975. The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album entitled Perfect Angel.Perfect Angel

Rilo Kiley - “Portions for Foxes”

Remember when Jenny Lewis was the indie girl that all hipster chicks aspired to be?

Rilo Kiley was the first concert I ever went to. Sneaking out under the guise of hanging out with one of my best guy friends (my parents were very Asian and very strict), I loved Rilo Kiley and couldn’t think of a better show to be my first. After a terrible set by a band with a very drunk lead singer who could not do anything but grumble and produce more beer seemingly out of thin air, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down took to the stage to open for Rilo Kiley. Thao ended up being the first act that I ever featured here on Ladies and an artist now very near and dear to my heart.

After what seemed like forever of waiting, Rilo Kiley took the stage. Jenny commented on how the Palladium’s stage was one of the most well ventilated stages that she had ever played on (us Texans do really love our air conditioning). Halfway through their set, Blake, in between strums on his guitar, put a cigarette in his mouth, lit it, and smoked it for a bit before Jenny made him put it out, solidifying himself as the biggest badass dude in my high school self’s mind.
Their encore was this song, their most popular song and the song that honestly should have been huge. It’s got an absolutely massive sound, and it’s sad that other than Grey’s Anatomy, the mainstream never quite caught on.

I think that ended up being one of the last shows they ever played. It’s no surprise that they’ve broken up officially; they’ve been broken for a while and their last album was never quite the same as they were before. It’s a real shame; they were all better musicians with each other than without.
